At Tallinn Zoo and Foundation Lutreola, volunteers run the species conservation projects, selling non-profit merchandise and collecting donations to raise funds. Everyone who has bought our cushions for their sofa, an animal-print shirt to wear, a mug to drink their morning coffee from or a bag to go shopping with, not to mention magnets on their fridges and badges on their jackets, has contributed to species conservation.

In 2017, a grand total of 12 155,82 Euros was collected from the sales and donations, which is more than double the amount in 2016.

Support to species conservation projects in 2017:

Tallinn Zoo and Foundation Lutreola have for years focused on the protection of European mink, as a result of which a population has been introduced to the island of Hiiumaa. 2910,01 Euros were collected for the support of European mink.

In order to preserve rhinos, collaboration continues with the international conservation organisation Save the Rhino to support the Ol Jogi conservancy in Kenya. 2634,52 Euros were transferred.

For the amur tiger and amur leopard, 3312,20 Euros were raised. The donation will go to WildCats Conservation Alliance that coordinates conservation efforts on the border of Russia and China.

For the protection of snow leopards, 1656,09 Euros were collected to be transferred to the respective conservation organisation Snow Leopard Trust.

The protection and research of the flying squirrel will be funded in the amount of 1643 Euros, but the suitable project is still to be determined.

In comparison – in 2016, 1115,77 Euros were raised for the protection of European mink; WildCats Conservation Alliance was supported in the amount of 2367,78 Euros; Snow Leopard Trust received a donation of 1183,89 Euros; through the organisation Save the Rhino, enclosures for orphaned or sick rhino babies were built at the Ol Jogi conservancy in Kenya for our contribution of 1030,40 Euros.

The operation of the online shop and sales at the Zoo grounds depend on voluntary activity. Many kind people have spent weekends or attended events at the zoo to sell merchandise and collect donations. Without them, the funds would never have been raised. We also care about the Estonian economy, which is why all the products we sell have been made locally. At the Zoo, deposit-subjected packaging can be donated to species conservation as well: the collection box is located by the exit of the Western Gate.
